My name is Rich Hill. I was not born with the skills or knowledge to invest. Interest was created during college when a friend invited me to meet his dad – a stock broker at Dean Witter Reynolds in Portland, Oregon. During the visit to his office, he talked about a small company that he was excited about. Before I left, I found myself owning 20 shares of the company (GAF). My total investment was about $220. A few months later, the stock price had doubled and I sold. This profitable sale set the stage for my continuing interest in investing.
More than 50 years later I am still investing. As much as I love stocks that appreciate in value, I PREFER INCOME! This means that I focus my time and attention on reasonably safe companies that can generate a reliable and sustainable distribution. The bottom line is: “I prefer immediate income“. As much as I appreciate dividend growth, I focus on higher yields above 6%.
I also try to buy and hold for the long term, and do my best to be patient in the face of a troubling market (I find that to be easier if I own strong stocks). I also try to buy low and to welcome a drop in the market so I can take advantage of lower prices and higher yields.
To get the higher yields that I want, I found myself investing in preferred stocks & ETD securities, midstream and master limited partnerships (MLP), REITS, cREITS, mREITS, business development companies (BDC) and even a few closed end funds (CEF).
I began developing a spreadsheet to gather the information I required to make intelligent investment decisions. In some cases, I could get great stock recommendations from books, articles and analysts, but I really wanted to make my own decisions on what to invest in rather than waiting for someone else to give me one or 2 good choices.
Eventually, it was necessary to convert from several spreadsheets to a database. This required outside help. I got lucky. I now work with 2 great programmer on this wonderful endeavor.
At this time, I consider Preferred stocks & ETD securities as my investment foundation so we developed that database program first. We then added programs for REIT stocks, MLP/Midstream and Dividend Diamonds 25+. Soon we will add High Yield stocks. These are mortgage REITS, commercial REITS and business development companies (BDC).
It is important that we provide the tools for individuals to be able to search for, identify and to analyze stocks of interest. This is a challenge, and one that we are making progress on. We also endeavor to provide articles of interest for both dividend growth and immediate income investors. Kody Kester is a young, but very talented investment analyst and author. He has written many articles for Seeking Alpha and we are lucky to have Kody join our IPI team.
With the help from I PREFER INCOME!, I look forward to years of successful income investing.
